Sheridan County School District #2
Wyoming

Reading Recovery is a critical component of the balanced literacy program that is used in the six elementary schools in Sheridan County School District #2. The Reading Recovery teachers are seen as expert reading teachers and work closely with classroom teachers to ensure that all students learn to read. They are also used as a resource for all children who struggle with early literacy. Several special education teachers have also been trained in Reading Recovery, including Director of Special Education Tom Racette. The district plans to train more special educators in Reading Recovery over the next several years. As superintendent of schools for Sheridan County School District #2, Craig Dougherty continues to support Reading Recovery in Sheridan and as state site coordinator for Wyoming.

Several communities in Montana and Wyoming are part of the Sheridan Reading Recovery Site. Wyoming teachers from Lander, St. Stephens Indian School, Lovell, and Kaycee are supported by the Sheridan site along with teachers from Billings, Wyola, and St. Labre Indian School in Montana. In the past 10 years, 1,267 children have had Reading Recovery lessons through the Sheridan training site.

The dedication of administration, teachers, and parents has resulted in many at-risk students becoming successful readers and writers. Jeri Mathes is the current teacher leader for the Sheridan site.

Background on the Sheridan Reading Recovery Site
The Sheridan and Gillette Reading Recovery sites, members of the Wyoming Reading Recovery Consortium, were established in 1995-1996 through the efforts of many Wyoming educators including Wyoming educational leaders Craig Dougherty and Ed Weber, and Nancy Leinius, a Wyoming Department of Education consultant. Financial support was provided by Consortium members and by the Wyoming Department of Education.

The Reading Recovery Professional Development Program for teachers and teacher leaders in Wyoming began in Riverton during the 1995-1996 school year. Six teacher leaders from around the state were trained by Dr. Kathleen McDonough, and 14 teachers were trained by Yvonne Gatley, both from Tuscon, AZ. Sheridan teacher Patsy Conner was trained as the teacher leader for the Sheridan site and served until the 1998-1999 school year. Jeri Mathes was trained as the teacher leader for the Gillette site. When Ms. Conner moved from Sheridan in 1999, Jeri became the teacher leader for Sheridan and Gillette.
