Blind Peer Review Process
Literacy Teaching and Learning (LTL) is a peer-reviewed and refereed publication, published by the Reading Recovery Council of North America (RRCNA). All submitted manuscripts will be read by editors to determine suitability for publication. Suitable publications will then be submitted to at least three reviewers. Authors will receive an acknowledgement when the submission is received and will be notified of the editors’ decisions within 3 to 6 months.

LTL uses a blind review process. Editors will send authors feedback from at least three blind peer reviews and, if necessary, specific suggestions for revision. Decisions for articles include:

  • Acceptance, as submitted
  • Preliminary acceptance, subject to approval by editors of revision and resubmission, based on reviewers’ feedback
  • Rejection, with the possibility of resubmission after substantive revision; articles will be returned to reviewers for a second, thorough review process
  • Rejection

The final article version will be forwarded to the RRCNA publications manager for technical edit, and authors will be contacted with any additional questions. A pdf file of the article will be emailed to authors for final approval, along with an assignment of copyright form, which must be returned prior to publication. Minimal revisions, only, will be allowed at this final stage of publication.

Guidelines for LTL Authors

  1. Write clearly, concisely, and use an active voice.
  2. Be sure the message is clear and has a consistent focus throughout.
  3. Include dialogue or samples of children’s work when possible.
  4. Articles will be edited to fit space and style requirements.
  5. RRCNA publications follow the style designated by the most recent edition of the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association.
  6. The RRCNA Style Manual provides additional guidance for authors.

How to Submit Articles for LTL
Literacy Teaching and Learning accepts manuscripts for review in electronic
format only. Please send an email attachment — including original manuscripts with
figures, tables, and children’s writing samples — to Sharan A. Gibson, lead editor, at ltl@mail.sdsu.edu.

Please do not embed tables and figures within the manuscript itself. Instead, as per APA format, tables and figures should be included following the reference list. Authors should also include a statement within the email indicating that the submission is an original manuscript that is not under simultaneous review for any other publication.

Submissions must be prepared as electronic files compatible with Microsoft Word. Manuscripts must be double-spaced, should be no more than 30 pages (excluding reference list, tables and figures), and must be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 250 words. The cover page of the submission should include the complete title, full name and professional affiliation of the author(s), email address and telephone number of the lead author. No identification of the author and affiliations should appear anywhere in the manuscript, including running headers and footers.
